Holiday hair care: how to protect your hair from sun, sea, and heat this summer

June 18, 2025

We all love a bit of fun in the sun, but your hair doesn’t always feel the same way. Between UV rays, salt water, and pool chlorine, summer can take a serious toll on your strands. Here’s how to keep your hair healthy, hydrated, and glossy all holiday long.

1. Wash me

Healthy summer hair starts in the shower. Whether you’re heading abroad or staying local for a British heatwave, switch to a hydrating shampoo that protects your hair from sun damage.

Our go-to? The Davines SU Range.

This range smells incredible (think fresh citrus vibes) and nourishes hair exposed to sun, salt, or chlorine. The SU shampoo is ultra-hydrating, exactly what thirsty hair needs, and it doubles as a body wash, saving suitcase space.

Add the SU Hair Milk or Anti-Dryness Shield for haircare on the go. You won’t find us at the beach without them.

2. Cover me up

When it comes to protecting coloured hair, nothing beats a good hat. UV rays can cause colour fade and dryness, so keep your hair shaded whenever you can.

Not a hat person? Go for a silk scarf. It still offers protection and adds a pop of colour to your outfit, practical and stylish.

3. Rinse me

Salt and chlorine are two of the biggest culprits for post-holiday hair damage. Always rinse your hair thoroughly after swimming in the sea or pool.

If there’s no shower nearby, pour some bottled water over your hair instead. It’ll help prevent salt or chlorine build-up (and that dreaded crunchy feel).

4. Brush me

Hair is most fragile when wet, so go easy. Use a wide-tooth comb, Tangle Teezer, or detangling brush to remove knots gently.

Start from the ends and work your way up – it’s kinder on your strands and helps prevent breakage.

5. Tie me up (no, not like that!)

Say goodbye to elastic bands. They tug, snap, and cause breakage over time.

Switch to Invisibobbles –they’re made from soft polyurethane (artificial resin) and are much gentler on your hair. Perfect for beach days, workouts, or hitting the dance floor.

Top tip: if your Invisibobble loses its shape, pop it in the sun or on a warm surface for a few minutes and it’ll shrink back to size.

So, there you have it, your summer hair survival kit! Follow these simple tips and your hair will stay soft, shiny, and healthy all season long (and if you’re heading abroad… we promise we’re only slightly jealous).
