Hair extension myths we’re not falling for

October 12, 2025

Thinking about getting hair extensions but worried about the horror stories?

We hear it all the time in the salon. From “they’ll ruin your hair” to “they never look natural,” there’s a lot of misinformation out there. At Mayfive Hair, we work with premium brands and expert techniques to make sure your extensions look seamless and keep your natural hair healthy.

Let’s set the record straight on some of the biggest myths around hair extensions.

1. “Hair extensions ruin your hair”

This is one of the most common fears, but it’s simply not true. When applied by a trained extensionist and maintained properly, extensions can actually improve the condition of your natural hair.

We’ve seen this first-hand. A client had her first set of pre-bonded extensions installed in May 2025 (see photo). When we removed them at the end of August, her natural hair had grown down and looked fuller and more even (see after photo).

Extensions, when done correctly, can protect fragile hair and give it the time and space to grow.

2. “Hair extensions can’t look natural”

The truth is, you only notice the bad ones! High-quality extensions that are colour-matched and applied with precision blend seamlessly with your natural hair. Our clients often tell us their friends don’t even realise they have extensions in until they mention it.

When applied professionally, your extensions should move, shine, and style just like your own hair.

3. “You can’t tie your hair up with extensions in”

Yes, you can. At Mayfive Hair, we leave a 2.5–5cm gap around the hairline when applying extensions, so you can comfortably tie your hair up without visible bonds or discomfort. Whether it’s a sleek ponytail or a messy bun, you won’t have to compromise on styling.

4. “Extensions are only for people who want long hair”

Extensions aren’t just about length. They can be used to add thickness, volume, or even pops of colour. For clients who want to experiment with new tones but can’t use traditional dyes due to allergies, extensions are the perfect solution. They let you play with highlights, lowlights, or balayage effects without any chemical colour on your natural hair.

The bottom line

Hair extensions, when done properly, are versatile, natural-looking, and can even support healthy hair growth. If you’ve been put off by outdated myths, we’d love to show you what’s really possible.
